Mentor Tip Sheet

1. Contact your mentee promptly to arrange a meeting/conference.
2. Add your mentee’s contact information to your cellphone and/or other devices.
3. Establish a regular schedule for interacting with your mentee. Let your mentee know the best time and best method to contact you.
4. Meet in person whenever possible.
5. Do not overcommit; your role is to assist your mentee’s path to law school and become a practicing lawyer. You are not a primary job source or an avenue of direct financial support.
6. Trust is a key priority in the relationship. Commit to: confidentiality, as appropriate; respectful interactions, being non-judgmental and being productive.
7. The initial meeting(s) should focus on planning and establishing l to 3 specific goals.
8. Sample topics: academic success; career planning, time management; stress management; interviewing; LSAT prep; professionalism; writing and analytical skills; leadership; resume prep; professional presentation and issues relating to the law school application process.
9. Sample questions:
   • How did you decide to attend Morehouse?
   • Why law school?
   • What challenges are you encountering?
   • What are you doing to prepare for law school?
   • Who is advising you about law school?
   • What is your major?
   • Are you taking courses that require comparative analysis and writing?
   • What law schools are you interested in attending?
   • What are your priorities for the school year?
   • Who has reviewed your resume?
   • Who have you identified to write recommendation letters?
   • Do you have a writing sample I can review?
